A man has been charged over the attack and murder of 22-year-old Chinese student whose semi-naked body was found with "horrific injuries" outside a Perth house.
Police charged Daniel Adam Wright, 35, with the wilful murder of Jiao Dan after he was arrested earlier in the day and questioned by Major Crime Squad detectives.
Ms Jiao's body was found on the front lawn of a house in Oswald Street in north suburban Innaloo early on Tuesday morning, near where she lived.
Late on Monday night, she and a friend boarded a train in Leederville after she had finished her part-time work as a cleaner at the Department of Sport and Recreation, police said.
She got off the train at Stirling station, close to her home, while her friend got off at an earlier stop.
Detective Senior Sergeant Paul Boult said the murder was an opportunistic crime.
"We would say that he was on the same train with Jiao Dan," he said.
They both got off at the Stirling train station. Jiao Dan, of course was walking home to Oswald Street, and he has followed ...
"We will allege there was a weapon used to assault and murder Jiao Dan."
Police found the unidentified weapon in a rubbish bin in Oswald Street.
Police made the arrest after viewing security train footage, information from witnesses, forensic evidence and items found at Wright's aunt's home in the suburb of Gwelup, just north of Innaloo.
Wright had been living with his aunt, but he was arrested him at his cousin's house at an address in Innaloo.
Police searched and cordoned off both the Gwelup and Innaloo houses.
Wright had been working for his uncle for one day as a cleaner when the killing occurred.
The cleaning business was not connected to Ms Jiao's work, police said.
Det Snr Sgt Boult would not reveal the nature of Ms Jiao's injuries "other than to say they were horrific".
Police were waiting on the results of a pathology report and would not say whether she had been sexually assaulted.
Ms Jiao's parents will arrive from China to identify their daughter within days. |
