Canada ’s new government is also taking another step. Today I am pleased to announce that we are making improvements to the Temporary Foreign Workers program that will make it easier for Canadian employers to meet their labour force needs. We’re doubling the time that a lower skilled, temporary foreign worker can stay in Canada , up to twenty-four months instead of twelve.
This will have a very big impact on important sectors of the economy, hospitality sector, tourism, trucking and for general labourers in construction as an example.
We’re also taking advantage of the ease of the use of the internet. As of April 1 st of this year, employers will be able to fill in and submit their applications for labour market opinions online. They will receive immediate acknowledgement that their application has been received.
Our goal is to help develop a sustainable workforce that is critical to our economy. The measures I’ve announced today are another step Canada ’s new government is taking to making certain that we have the basis for a strong economy so that we can help Canadians build a better and stronger future.
