Council may extend free bus rides for students
Free Brandon Transit rides between classes will continue until the end of the school year for Grade 7 and 8 students if the city approves an extension of the pilot project tonight. “We wanted to extend it because so far everything has been very successful,” school trustee Marty Snelling said yesterday. The pilot project was a joint effort between the city and school division, and was originally set to expire on Jan. 31. But the program is now set to be extended until June 30.Coun. Murray Blight (Victoria) expects city council will approve the extension during its regular meeting tonight. He said an average of 24 per cent of the 992 students eligible for free rides on city buses have taken advantage of the program since it began last September. That adds up to about 3,500 total rides in 2006.
